Space Invaders: Women Museum Leaders, 18 March 2016

10.30am        Registration & Refreshments

11.00am         Welcome by Hilary Carty

11.10am         Space Invaders: Women Museum Leaders, Dr Nirmal Puwar

What happens when bodies take up positions which have historically and conceptually not been reserved for them? How do ‘outsiders’ become ‘insiders’? Dr Puwar will argue that subtle processes of exclusion are better understood when we reflect on the conditions of inclusion, and push us to go beyond our immediate goals for gender equality in museum leadership.

Dr Puwar has undertaken ethnographic studies on senior civil servants, politicians, and academics. Her paper is based on this research and a pilot study of female museum leaders.
